Sustainable Solutions for FPSOs

The oil and gas industry has a critical role to play in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, as a significant share stems from the upstream production of oil and gas. From a regulatory standpoint, several countries and regions, particularly in Europe and North America, are implementing policies aimed at curbing emissions from upstream operations. Driven by tightening emissions regulations and rising interest in alternative fuels across multiple industries, demand is increasing not only within traditional shipping but also in offshore segments, creating both opportunities and competition between sectors for access to low-carbon fuels

Lifecycle OTS Development and Use for an FPSO

Check out the latest report on a case study with SBM Offshore and Inprocess on implementing a lifecycle Operator Training Simulator (OTS) on an FPSO project to both verify the Integrated Control and Safety System (ICSS) and prepare operators ahead of FPSO start-up. By reusing the high-fidelity dynamic process models from the engineering phase and integrating them with the actual ICSS software, the OTS enabled virtual start-up sessions, early detection of ICSS issues, and realistic operator training sessions in preparation for the First Oil, Flare-out, and water injection start-up. The lifecycle approach is considered to have reduced commissioning risks, accelerated key milestones, improved operator readiness and safety. Moreover, it is estimated that the long-term benefits in production performance and emissions reduction outweigh the initial investment.

Multi-Purpose Dynamic Simulators and Lifecycle Modelling: One Model, Many Uses

The Multi-Purpose Dynamic Simulator (MPDS) is a groundbreaking concept that leverages dynamic process simulation by extending the application of dynamic process modelling across process design, commissioning, and operational phases. Traditionally, dynamic process models have been used independently during engineering phases and later on for operator training prior to commissioning.  Inprocess employs a phased approach to MPDS development, ensuring that models grow and adapt to meet evolving project needs. Each phase represents a distinct stage in the lifecycle

2025 FPSO Market Outlook

With a slowdown in FPSO sanctioning activities last year, Rystad Energy projects a significant uptick over the current five-year cycle to near post-pandemic levels. This will be driven by both new developments and redevelopments – many of which were delayed due to volatile oil prices, a strained supply chain, challenging project financing in the energy transition context and the ongoing cost inflation.

Future Ready FPSO Projects

Carbon emissions from the FPSO sector are poised to surge amid a flurry of new deepwater developments, increasing concerns on the topic. Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are estimated to grow 27% by the end of the decade only in projects with that type of platform. FPSO decarbonization is receiving significant attention, with multiple available technologies to reduce field carbon footprint. Adopting these technologies will decrease the intensity from 19 barrels of oil equivalent (boe) to 17 boe produced by 2030. Check out our report to find out how FPSO projects can be future-ready designed to meet lower carbon emission objectives

FPSO Supply Chain Strategies

Expenditure in offshore upstream projects has increased in recent years. However, 2023 closed with fewer approvals for FPSO projects than expected. High interest rates and full contractor backlogs proved hurdles for the market. Investment forecast for the next five years proves to be promising as FPSO growth is estimated to increase by 40% compared to the previous period.

Check out the report put together by Rystad Energy on FPSO Supply Chain Strategies.

FPSO Directors' Message

Twenty-five years ago, we launched FPSO World Congress to connect the offshore oil & gas industry together. Our aim was to bring together key stakeholders involved in FSO / FPSO / FLNG / FSRU projects around the world. Since then, the congress has established itself as the bridge between floating vessel operators, oil & gas producers, and offshore solution providers as we welcomed over thousands of delegates from countries all over the world. It is an enormous privilege to reach this milestone – and we haven’t done it alone.

FPSO World Congress is what it is today because of our community: our network, our partners, and most importantly, all our supportive partners and delegates like yourself who challenge us to keep innovating. As we are celebrating our 25th anniversary this year, we are also celebrating 25 years of your commitment and support. It’s a cycle that has repeated itself at FPSO World Congress over the last decade. Be it exploring engineering practices, refining remote and digital operations, or shaping the future of alternative energy — each chapter of our story has been co-authored by you
